COPPER ALLERGY? Myth or Fiction
Someone that has an allergic reaction to copper would not be able to handle a metallic copper object such as copper jewelry without causing an allergic reaction.
Has gold and other jewelry ever left greenish or black marks on your skin? It's happened to most of us at least once or twice, and even though some people are allergic to certain materials, most staining isn't caused by an allergy--it's a reaction between our skin and the metals used in jewelry, especially when the jewelry touches areas that perspire. Some jewelry might have enough copper in it to cause a reaction, and some people seem to have the body chemistry that's prone to staining.
Copper has a high electrical and thermal conductivity second only to silver among pure metals at room temperature. Copper is a reddish-colored metal; it has its characteristic color because of its band structure. In its liquefied state, a pure copper surface without ambient light appears somewhat greenish, a characteristic shared with gold. When liquid copper is in bright ambient light, it retains some of its pinkish luster.
Copper occupies the same family of the periodic table as silver and gold.
Copper is a metal that does not react with water (H2O), but the oxygen of the air will react slowly at room temperature to form a layer of brown-black copper oxide on copper metal.
DID YOU KNOW?
Copper is germicidal, via the oligodynamic effect. For example, brass doorknobs disinfect themselves of many bacteria within a period of eight hours.[11] Antimicrobial properties of copper are effective against MRSA,[12] Escherichia coli[13] and other pathogens.[14][15][16] In colder temperature, longer time is required to kill bacteria.
